Mortensen Sets New WPT Record
Mortensen Sets New WPT Record Carlos Mortensen has set a new benchmark for the World Poker Tour by winning the first Hollywood Poker Open poker online tournament played in Indiana. He picked up a third WPT victory and tied Gus Hansen for the most WPT titles ever won. The prize money of $393,820 puts Mortensen in front of Daniel Negreneau for the top money winner on the WPT circuit. Mortensen has collected more than $5.6 US million from participating in 56 WPT events. Born in Ecuador in 1972, Mortensen eventually moved to Spain then immigrated to the US to be a professional poker online player. He is the only Hispanic to ever win the US WSOP Main Event. His play is typically characterized as loose, with plenty of bluffing, and he tends to stack his chips in creative geometric towers. After he moved to the US, he won $1.5 million by taking first place at the 2001 poker online Main Event; and he won the WPT Championship during its fifth season. He is the only player to ever have won both the WPT and WSOP Championships. Mortensen went heads-up against Mike Mustafa, whose stack was crippled when Mortensen flopped a straight with 7-8 pocket cards. The final table winners and prizes at the Hollywood Poker Open were: 1. Carlos Mortensen – $393,820 2. Mike Mustafa – $223,623 3. Frank Calo – $167,717 4. Chris Bell – $124,966 5. Ravi Raghavan – $105,234. 6. Jerry Payne – $88,791
