The Strategy Behind Snooker & Pool

Sure, you’re not drawing isosceles triangles or measuring the length of its hypotenuse at a pool hall (doing that might bring about a few stares down your way), but billiards is all about angles, positioning the cue ball to ricochet off other balls, ultimately causing them to go into oneor allof the six pockets that line the table’s perimeter.

The different kinds of games you can play at a pool table far out number the 15 balls used in your typical game (not counting the 8-ball or cue ball, of course). One of those games is snooker.

Snooker is a game that originated in Britain and came to be called “snooker,” it’s believed, after Neville Chamberlain referred to an army cadet as a snooker when his play wasn’t exactly up to snuff. “Snooker” by definition is a first year cadet; Chamberlain then referred to the rest of the men playing with him that they were all snookers. The name stuck to the game since then.

The object of the game is similar to your regular game of 8-ball: Put all the balls in the pockets that line the table. But the way in which the balls are set up at the beginning of the gamenot to mention the balls’ colors, the multiple “fouls” that can be committed, the number of balls used, the referee, and the fact that each game is made up of multiple framesmakes this game truly unique when compared to its counterparts.

Snooker has never really caught fire in the United States but that doesn’t hold true for the United Kingdom. In fact, it is the most watched sporting event outside soccer, or football, as it’s known throughout most of the world. In 1985, one-third (18.5 million people) of the United Kingdom population plunked themselves in front of their television sets to watch Dennis Taylor win on the final shota performance that is remembered as one of the sport’s best moments.

Since 1927, the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association organize the professional tour and championship; the champion ship is held in Sheffield, England.

Home Field Advantage in the MLB (Part 1)

Of all the major sports, baseball is known for not having a great home field advantage. During the regular season, astute bettors will prey upon bookies by betting on teams that are in situations where the home field advantage is extreme.

Home teams win on average 53.6% of the time. This translates to a 7.2% advantage over road teams which is a smaller disparity compared to Basketball and Football.

Home teams in Football and Basketball feed off of their home town fans and are motivated. With baseball, it is most appropriate to try to find situations in which baseball teams will be more motivated.

Consider the Red Sox are 51-15 + 29 units the past 3 seasons at home off a home loss. Over the same span and angle, the Rangers are 47-33 +17 units and the Braves are 52-20 +20 units. These are 3 such teams that have a strong home field advantage given this situation. Because baseball is such an unpopular sport with bettors and this angle does not apply to all teams, the oddsmakers have not had to adjust on a situation as this.

Those 3 teams alone combined for 150-68, +66 units. This means that to even it out, the spread would have to be adjusted 30 points. So instead of being -130, the team would have to be -160. Instead of being +145, they would have to be +115. This is considerable in the eyes of most bettors. The normal home field advantage is already taken into account in the spread but it is the handicapper’s job to find profitable situations in which the home field advantage is higher and capitalize on it.

Improving Website Performance

Images, graphic and flash animation

Many sites have images or graphics that are too large. By too large, I don’t necessarily mean the dimensions of the images, but the file size is excessive and doesn’t load quickly in a web browser. There are no hard and fast rules about file sizes but if the website doesn’t load in a few seconds most visitors will move on to a different website. Have a qualified web designer check out the website and make sure there isn’t an abundance of large images that may slow down your website. You can reduce image size by reducing the quality, for instance with Jogs even a compressed image will still display fine for the web.

Another issue is flash animation. While animation can add a nice dimension to your website, it can slow down the speed of your website, and sometimes just become tiresome if over used. Once your visitors have seen the animation a few times they probably won’t want to wait each time while it plays again. Animation if used sparingly and with taste can enhance a website without bogging it down, but more and more websites that once had intro flash pages are removing them. Excessive us of Flash can also decrease your search engine rankings.

Web page code

Check your code and make sure that it is efficient and well written. If you have any comments in your code then take these out. Just reducing the code bloat of your site can save a few Kb each time your page is accessed – and given a site gets thousands of hits a day, that can save you a lot of money in bandwidth charges.

CSS and Caching

Having your web page style information in an external file can improve performance since CSS style sheets are cached the first time they are accessed. Therefore when a visitor goes to different pages on your site, any CSS style sheets that have already been accessed will remain in cache. CSS is also a great way to limit the amount of HTML code by separating code from content. Any style information can be declared in one place, but used throughout your web site.

Links

Make sure any links in your web pages are valid. So if you link to other web pages on external websites, make sure that the pages still exist. Occasionally page names change on external sites, which can cause links to become invalid. This is also a detriment as far as search engines. Search engines check for links and if there are bad link, they may penalize your site. Of course links to internal pages on your site should be valid as well. So if you add and remove web pages on your site, insure that any links to these pages remain accurate.

Hosting

If your website is still slow after cleaning up your HTML code, trimming back the size of your images, graphics and animation, you may want to evaluate the quality of your web host. I don’t recommend free hosting. You need reliability and accountability in regards to website hosting, and free hosting providers usually have servers that are overly taxed and lack the resources needed.

Design

Some websites are beautifully designed with lots of graphics, but if your visitors can’t quickly and easily navigate your site, what’s the point? Remember the goal of your website. Is it to sell a product or service, provide information, or is it to dazzle the visitor with animation and web design skills. I’ve found that most successful websites inform, provide an important message, or sell a product safely, securely and efficiently.

Invest Your Free Child Trust Fund Voucher with Scottish Friendly, so Your Precious Ones Can Have a Huge Lump Sum of Money when They Reach Adulthood

So what is this Child Trust Fund that all the talk is about? Are you one of the lucky people who are in the know about the Child Trust Fund? Are you clued up on the Child Trust Fund? Few UK parents remarkably

small number of parents seem to know about the fact that all babies are given a free £250 voucher from the the State to put. The vouchermay be invested in any one of threekinds of CTF account, Stakeholder – a shares-based account that switchesinto cash, a savings account or a shares account. It is an excellent way to for the future life of a youngster

Scottish Friendly is a designated provider of the Child Trust Fund Voucher. The State is eager for the public to have access to Stakeholder accounts and this is the type of account that we offer. This means that:

• Investments go into Scottish Friendly’s Managed Growth Fund, which intends to provide good growth potential
• It invests in part in shares to get the benefit of potentially higher returns over 18 years, compared to a cash deposit account (although the value of shares cango down as well as rise whereas capital would be protected in a deposit account)
• It is available with a low ‘Stakeholder’ funds charge of only 1.5% per year
• When attaining the age of 18 the young person will get a lump sum, wholly free of Capital Gains and Income Tax under current law
• It is affordable – additional payments can be put in the account from only £10

A notable attraction of the Child Trust Fund is that anyone – parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, friends – can contribute to the Fund to a top limit of £1,200 per year to help augment the child’s Fund (once added, this money is not able to be withdrawn).

All this means our Stakeholder account provides a good balance between possible high returns and a reduced level of risk. There is also the additional assurance that our account meets with the Government’s stakeholder criteria. Nonetheless this does not mean that returns are guaranteed or that Stakeholder accounts are appropriate for everyone. Remember that the value of shares in the Managed Growth Fund (where your Child Trust Fund money is held) can fall as well as rise and is not guaranteed.

Only children who were born on or after 1st September 2002 are qualified to start up a Child Trust Fund. If you have children born before the {1st of September 2002 who are not allowed you could contemplate investing for them with a Child Bond – it’s a tax-free savings plan intended for long-term growth. It is undoubtedly the case that saving for a child is a sensible means of preparing for possible future credit crunches.

Dallas Mavericks Mbenga Receives Six Game Suspension

During game 4 of the NBA playoffs western conference finals in Phoenix, Dallas Mavericks center D.J. Mbenga, felt there was a problem brewing, with some fans and the wife of the coach Avery Johnson. He did not think twice, as he got up and entered the stands to make sure she was ok. He was merely trying to coax her into the locker room to avoid any altercations. The league however, did not see the need in Mbenga’s efforts and subsequently suspended him for 10 games. This was later dropped down to 6 games and this is where it stands. At this point Dallas now has two players that are suspended during these playoffs, as Guard Jason Terry was forced to miss Game 6 of the second round against San Antonio for punching Michael Finley.

This suspension is a game more than what Antonio Davis from the New York Knicks received for leaping into the stands to go to the aid of his wife that he believed was being harassed by some heckling fans. The NBA and commissioner are trying to make it very clear that the players will not tolerate this type of action. If there is trouble in the stands, this is what security is for and they will deal with it accordingly.

It may not be enough however, for the league to impose suspensions or fines as long as there may be a family member being harassed by fans, you really cannot blame a player for looking out for them, what needs to be done is have stricter rules governing the protection of family of the players in a NBA wide level.

Choosing Your Scuba Diving Gear

Someone once said that scuba diving is like going back to Mother Nature’s womb albeit temporarily because every scuba diver would like to rise above deep waters no matter how cool the scene down there may be.

Scuba diving is a complicated sport that requires training and endurance. Scuba diving is not for the faint of heart, or for those who would shrink at the though of being submerged in water for a long time. This is not to say that scuba diving chooses its players because almost everyone can be a scuba diver, provided they do not have the age and health limitations.

Children as young as fifteen years old and in good health can train on scuba diving to prepare themselves for certification. However, all those interested to undergo training should fill up a health questionnaire and undergo medical checkups to determine their physical conditions.

While scuba divers have more opportunity to admire the fishery resources of the world, divers also dive for other reasons such as for scientific, commercial, military or recreational purposes.

Divers cannot go scuba diving without a certification even if they are doing it for fun. Majority of scuba divers do so for recreational purposes but they still have to undergo certification. Recreational divers can choose from a variety of specialization like underwater photography, search and rescue diving or night diving. Once they become experts in diving they can turn it into a career and become dive masters or underwater photographers.

There are however divers who dive for commercial purposes like for the purpose of salvaging sunken ships, constructing bridges and dams or to build underwater structures. Scientific divers focus on diving for the purpose of research.

A scuba diver must necessarily be a good swimmer who can float on water and swim fairly long distances. Basic swimming skills plus good health will make you eligible for certification as a diver.

A diver must tale note of his safety all of the time not only by getting proper training but also by making use of basic scuba diving gears like masks, fins and snorkels. A beginner can just rent the basic diving gear but if you intend to make this sport a long-term commitment then it would be best to buy the equipment. These three basic diving gear are every affordable and can be bought anywhere.

However, there is other diving gear that are more expensive like wet or dry suits, regulators or buoyancy compensators and scuba diving tanks. To make the most of your scuba diving gear, make sure to rinse them with fresh or tap water after using them. Allow them to dry but not in direct sunlight since they are made of rubber and can easily break down and deteriorate.

The basic diving gear is the same for most divers but specialty divers may have use for more sophisticated gadgets and equipment. But whatever kind of diving you do, always make sure to use the safety gears to protect yourself from the dangers of diving.

Football 101 in the Pac-10

Last week, we learned a lot about the Pac-10. Class is in session for another week as we take a look back at the events that left the conference with just one unbeaten team.

We’ll start with the most basic lesson of all: if you flirt with disaster every week, eventually you will have disaster. UCLA had been the darlings of the pollsters; even Sports Illustrated called them the “other team in town”. And the Bruins had been getting it done week in and week out, digging huge holes and finding a way out. Not last week. Coach Mike Stoops has as complex a defense as you’ll find in the Pac-10 outside of South Central L.A. And with a handful of Bruin mistakes and a complete inability to stop the running game, it wasn’t even close.

Speaking of the Trojans, they taught us that if you’re going to war against a guy with a machine gun, you should probably bring a machine gun and not a slingshot. The Stanford Cardinal brought a slingshot, and it wasn’t even a good one. By the end of a quarter the Trojans had built an insurmountable lead, and a late Stanford touchdown resulted in a win against the spread for Stanford. For those who took USC in that game, USC might have gotten things done a little too quickly, because their offense was in slowdown mode by the second half.

Oregon showed us that while apples may not fall far from the tree, a Leaf can. Ducks fans are hoping that QB Brady Leaf is not the second coming of his malcontent brother Ryan, at least off the field. In the Ducks’ 27-20 overtime win over Cal, it was Leaf – not starter Dennis Dixon – who provided the heroics with a touchdown pass. Notable in the loss for Cal was a miss of a 53-yard field goal at the end of regulation. When Cal beat USC in 2003, the last loss for the Trojans, it was a late field goal that provided the impetus for Cal. It remains to be seen whether the Bears can summon enough offensive firepower to hang with the Trojans.

The Beavers of OSU taught us that while George Washington couldn’t tell a lie, Washington can’t play football in 2005. Wait, we knew that already. The anemic Beaver offense still mustered enough points to beat the Huskies, who could only score ten of their own against an OSU offense that allowed 156 points in three of its losses this season. OSU QB Matt Moore came back strong after throwing six (yes, six) interceptions in a loss to Arizona the week before.

And Arizona State taught us that if it’s college football, it’s hard to root against someone named Rudy. QB Rudy Carpenter has now thrown for almost 800 yards in his last two games, and WR Rudy Burgess threw for another in the win over Washington State. Their special teams was not spearheaded by Rudy Ruettiger, however. Don’t overlook the amazing performance of Jerome Harrison, who had 283 yards in the losing effort for Washington State with his 12th straight 100-yard game.

So who winds up getting schooled this week? Only time will tell, as USC heads up to Cal to avenge their last loss and Arizona State ventures to the quiet Rose Bowl to take on UCLA.
