Ness Notes (Jan 16)

EIGHT of the NFL’s 11 playoff games are in the books and what have we learned? Home teams are just 3-5 SU and ATS, with all eight SU winners of the games, also covering the pointspread. The closest any SU winner came to NOT covering the pointspread was Seattle (closed as a 9 1/2-point favorite), in its 20-10 win over Washington this past Saturday.

Over/under bettors have seen SIX of the eight games go under the total, with the highest-scoring game being the one with the lowest-posted total (naturally!). That would be Carolina’s 29-21 win over Chicago yesterday, a game which saw its total close at 31.

My free play for Monday is in college hoops, taking Kansas over Missouri at 7:00 ET. I have just a SINGLE play on Monday and that’s my 10* Western Conference TV Game of the Month, featuring the game between the SA Spurs and the Memphis Grizzlies.

Playoff Musings

Maybe defense doesn’t win championships? The Bears owned the league’s best-scoring defense in the regular season, allowing 12.6 PPG. In fact, they had allowed just 61 points in their eight home games (just 31 points over their last six!), the lowest point total of any team since the NFL went to a 16-game season back in 17978. However, the Panthers ‘ripped’ the Bears for 29 points and 434 yards on Sunday.

The Colts owned the league’s second-best scoring defense at 15.4 PPG but allowed the Steelers to go 84 yards in 10 plays on their first drive of the game and then 72 yards on seven plays in their second drive, giving Pittsburgh a 14-0 lead which set the tone for the remainder of the game.

Turnovers did in the defending champs, as New England was guilty of FIVE turnovers on Saturday night, leading to 24 points by the Broncos. In New England’s previous 10 playoff games (all wins), the Pats had committed just SIX turnovers.

Interestingly though, the other three games this weekend were NOT decided by turnovers, as Washington, Indy and Chicago combined for just two giveaways while forcing SIX takeaways. That’s not the norm though, as in the wildcard round, the four winning teams won the turnover ‘battle’, 12-1!

While passing attacks may be more “sexy”, the rule of thumb for winning in the NFL is run the ball better and more often than your opponent. All eight playoff winners have out-rushed their opponents, as well as had more rushing attempts during the game

Rex Grossman was the fifth and final QB to make his NFL playoff debut in this year’s postseason. With Chicago’s 29-21 loss to Carolina, that makes playoff ‘virgins’ 0-5 SU and ATS in this year’s postseason. However, Cincinnati’s Carson Palmer deserves a mulligan, as he was injured and lost for the game on the Bengals’ second offensive play.

Speaking of QBs, was there a more pathetic site than Peyton Manning in his post-game press conference saying he wanted to be a good teammate, then ‘ripping’ his teammates. Peyton surely doesn’t deserve all the blame for Indy’s loss but how does he explain away his 3-6 career mark in the postseason? In comparison, Carolina’s Jake Delhomme, is 5-1 in his six career playoff starts, with a TD-to-interception ratio of 10-2!

The championship games are set for next Sunday with Pittsburgh at Denver (Broncos are 3 1/2-point favorites with a total of 41) and Carolina at Seattle (Seahawks are 4 1/2-point favorites with a total of 43 1/2). Pittsburgh is the first No. 6 to advance to a conference title game since the league expanded to its current playoff format in 1990. Ten other No. 6 seeds had tried, including Washington this year, before the Steelers broke through. As for the Broncos, Denver is 12-2 in its playoff history at home, compared to a 3-8 record on the road.

Carolina has now won four straight playoff games on the road (tying an NFL record) and will face a Seattle team which just ended a 21-year drought between playoff wins by beating the Redskins on Saturday. This will be just the second conference championship game for Seattle in its 30-year history (lost the ‘83 AFC title game to the LA Raiders 30-14) and its first-ever at home. The Panthers, in the league since just 1995, will be making their third NFC title-game appearance.

The NBA features a 12-game schedule on Martin Luther King Day, beginning with games tipping at 1:05 ET. TNT has a great doubleheader, with the Spurs taking on the Grizzlies at 8:05 ET and then the Heat at the Lakers at 10:35 ET.

Memphis is the league’s top defensive team allowing 86.7 PPG and San Antonio ranks second at 88.8 PPG. These teams just met Saturday night in San Antonio with the Spurs winning 80-79. However, using the Carolina/Chicago “theory”, the final will probably come 110-109. San Antonio is favored by 1 1/2-points with a total of 169. It’s Shaq vs Kobe in the nightcap, for the fourth time since they ’split’. Miami’s won the three previous meetings but LA’s covered two of the three. The Heat are favored by 3 1/2-points with a total of 204.

Tonight’s college basketball schedule features a 15-game card, including a tripleheader on ESPN. Kansas, which lost Saturday to Kansas St for the first time in 32 meetings, is at Missouri at 7:00 ET. The Jayhawks are favored by 2 1/2-points with a total of 129.

Connecticut (14-1) is at Syracuse (15-2) at 9:00 ET, where the Huskies are a 1 1/2-point choice, even though Syracuse is on a 12-game winning streak (total is 148 1/2). At midnight ET, Gonzaga hosts Loyola-Marymount, as the Bulldogs look to extend their home winning streak to 32 straight games. Led by the nation’s leading scorer, Adam Morrison (28.2 PPG), Gonzaga is favored by 18 points with a total of 155.

Electric-powered Engine in F1?

On 2006 Formula 1 engines slimmed to 2.4 liters and a massive multi-million dollar spending on their research. Yesterday a plan for an electric-powered formula 1 racing car was revealed. It would compete against the world’s fastest cars at speeds of more than 180 mph.

The engine it will be an electric-hydraulic power system which achieved speeds of more than 90 mph for 600 miles without stopping.

This electric-power unit can accelerate to nearly 130mph in under nine seconds more than twice the power of a Formula 1 racing car. The F1 rules say the engine must have an internal combustion. The development has gone into making engines lighter, rev higher and last slightly longer than before even when technology comes along by road-going cars.

Under current Formula 1 rules, introducing a single ECU the massive difference is going to come from the drivers, so top drivers will be at a premium. The old technology engine is not only a backward move it’s a backward for the motoring industry.

A Quick Introduction to Fantasy Professional Football

Summary: Football has become a gigantic sport in the United States. Heroes are being made each weekend and the number of people watching football on TV is at an all-time high. With this popularity, more and more people want to get more from their experience with football. With computers and gaming on computers also gaining popularity, Fantasy Football is gaining popularity, also. Have you caught the bug yet and started participating in a Fantasy Football League? Now would be a great time!

Article: Whether you already know every professional football team and player like the back of your hand, or you just want to learn enough to look less blank when conversing with friends, family or coworkers, fantasy football can enhance your NFL viewing experience.

As a lottery commercial says, “you have to be in it to win it”. In order to join the fun, you have to pick a “host”, select your preferred NFL players, and join or start a league.

You have a ton of options when considering where to host a fantasy football team. Some of the most commonly played “hosts” include CBS Sportsline.com, SportingNews.com, YahooSports Fantasy Football and CDM Fantasy Sports.

Depending on the host and league, you’ll play one of several formats. One requires an upfront payment to enter your league, but doesn’t charge you for players you pick up during the season from a free agent or “waiver” pool. Generally, the higher you pay as your upfront fee, the larger your prize if you win your league for the season.

The second format is free to join, but will cost you for most or all players you claim off waivers or as free agents after the initial draft period ends. Generally, trades with other players are free of charge. Be careful, though! Those trades can be costly in another way to you if you give away too much to get that must-have player.

The most common formats allow you a team made up of one or more quarterbacks, one or more running backs, one or more wide receivers, one or more tight ends and one or more defense/special teams (DST) units. Depending on the league, you may play all of your players at once or pick some players as “starters” and assign others as “reserves”. Only your active players (starters} earn you points for that week. You get points for their league-defined accomplishments each week. What and how much your team will score will vary from league to league.

Now you need players on your team, so it is time for you to “draft” some football players. Using your basic understanding of football, and drawing on your NFL savvy, or some free or paid information sources to review, you’ll rank real NFL players before your league draft. You may also be able to use the players as “pre-ranked” by your host.

You’ll also need to decide whether you want the excitement and time commitment of a live draft, or the relative ease and less time offered by an automated draft. If you are a beginner, the automated draft is highly recommended.

During the season, there are “BYE” weeks, during which an NFL team and its players get the week off to recharge. Real players also can be injured, so you lose their productivity. On the other hand, you and your team don’t get any time off, so you’ll probably have to make trades and perform waiver wire moves to ensure that you have a full, strong team playing every week.

Those are the basics. Now, it is up to you to apply your special knowledge, instinct or hunches, and “Win one for the Gipper”. Before your draft, you might want to challenge friends, family members or co-workers who have similar skills to yours to join your league. Some healthy competition can make your fantasy football experience even more enjoyable.

As with any game, keep in mind that it is only a game. You will not become rich or popular dependent upon how well you play. It is mostly purely entertainment. If you keep this in mind and don’t take yourself or the game too seriously, you will have a great time. It is a great game and you should have no trouble finding others with your passion and skill level. Have fun and good luck!

Outdoor Gear For Your Favorite Activities

If you love the great outdoors, then you know that there are many activities out there for you to enjoy. Of course, you probably also know that for each outdoor adventure, you will need different kinds of gear. What gear will you need for your next excursion? It is vital to be prepared with the proper equipment. If you don’t know exactly what gear you will need, here is a look at what will be necessary for your future journeys.

Are you into camping? There are a lot of items you’ll need to have the best camping experience possible. It goes without saying that a tent will be on your list, but there are more things to remember than that. A cooler for food supplies, backpacks, sleeping bags (the thickness you will need depends on the weather conditions), camping furniture such as chairs and cots, cookware and utensils, and lamps are things you shouldn’t forget to take with you. When you are thinking about what tent to buy, take into account how often you will be using it. Where are you going to take it? What can you afford? There is a huge selection of tents to choose from, so make sure the tent you get is the one that is right for you.

Climbing is a daring sport for the bravest outdoor enthusiast. Be sure you don’t try it without the right equipment! Ropes, cords, slings, harnesses, helmets, rock climbing shoes and boots to make your climb easier, backpacks and clothing suitable for climbing are some of the things you’ll need. There are several kinds of harnesses to look at, so think about your climbing style to determine the best kind for you. Test your harness to assure the best fit before you buy. You should also find specialty shoes that will give you the friction and focus you need as you climb.

Is cycling more of your thing? Your bike isn’t the only thing you will need. Helmets, backpacks, water bottles, and gloves are some of the items you’ll want to have with you. You could also benefit from clothes made specifically for cycling. So how do you choose a bicycle, anyway? It depends on your style of biking. Where do you bike? How important is comfort to you? What size of bike do you need? Are you going to ride it on a rugged trail or on a paved road? Ask yourself these questions when shopping.

Canoeing and kayaking are other popular sports for those who enjoy nature. What should you have packed to take on the river or lake? Carrying yolks, boat cushions and chairs, pump, safety kit, floats and life vests are important. Need help choosing a canoe or kayak? Consider the type of water you will be paddling on (lake, river, or ocean) as well as the types of expeditions you will be venturing into.

The avid runner must be fit and in great physical shape. However, you’ll need more than that to be successful at this activity. Good running shoes are an absolute must, along with specialty socks to help your feet. The right clothing will also help. As you try on running shoes, pay attention to comfort. You don’t want to worry about blisters or sprains later on!

So skiing is your hobby? Maybe you prefer snowboarding. The list of gear for skiers and snowboarders include skis, boots, poles, avalanche safety equipment, helmets, bindings and goggles. Of course, what you dress in is vital. A warm, waterproof ski coat or parka is essential, as well as hats, waterproof gloves, socks, pants and earmuffs. What skis or snowboard you need can be determined by your style and skill.

With so many fun things to do in the great outdoors, everyone can find something they will love. Just don’t forget to pack all of the right gear!

Myrtle Beach Golf – Quantity & Quality

Myrtle Beach is the best of both worlds for every golfer, QUALITY and QUANTITY. The Grand Strand has over 120 courses designed by the best in the game: Dye, Jones, Nicklaus, Palmer, and Fazio to name a few. Over 1 Million golfers played there in 2004. You will find the largest assortment of quality courses to test your game, both mentally and physically.

Ten years ago, our group of relatives, friends, and friends of friends, began our now yearly trek to this golf capital of the world. Although our line-up of players and courses alters slightly from year to year, one constant remains, that is the great golf bargains we have found in this golf mecca. Planning for the next years trip begins even before we putt out on the 18th hole of our final day. We don’t want it to end, and we can’t wait for the next trip to begin.

Living in the northeast, we play some great courses in PA, MD, and VA throughtout the year. But to us, it is all is just a warm-up to our late August mini-tour of this South Carolina beach town. With most of us approaching our late 40’s or early 50’s, it’s the one time of year the wives let us indulge in a week of golf heaven, and we really get to be boys again (it pays to have picked the right mate). Since we have already fulfilled our families’ summer vacation obligations, and the yard work is winding down, late August is the perfect time for our trip to paradise.

Playing Myrtle Beach in late August finds courses 1/2 to 1/3 of their premium peak season rates. Along with the lower hotel fees for this late season visit, we easily justify the trip. Crowds are low, most kids are back in school, and there are times when we are literally the only golfers on the course. Play is fast and cheap, so we have to go 36 holes!

We play combinations of “related” or “sister” courses like True Blue & Caledonia. Or, Tidewater & Grande Dunes. Many combinations like these provide substantional discounts for same day play, some even offer discounts for playing both in the same week. Complexes like the Legends or Wild Wing, have numerous courses on the same property where after a quick shower and lunch at their fantastic facilities, we are well tuned for a second 18 holes. Tee Times are in abundance for most of these top quality courses, we rarely run into a problem getting on a course. These are some of the best courses in the world. Where else can you play a TPC course for a replay rate of only $40-$50? The fee includes the same friendly accommodating staff, cart, practice range, full use of the facilities, locker room, restaurants, bar, and of course, the COURSE! All for a fraction of the peak season rates!

Private Membership courses are available for play as well. For example, stay at the “Caravelle”, and Tee Times are available at “the Dunes” Golf & Beach Club. Newly renovated by Rees Jones, this course is a spectacular play, and former home of the PGA Senior Championship. Play it again the same day and pay less than you would for your regular muni-course back home. Intimidated by the courses? Don’t be, 4 or 5 sets of tees are available on most courses to accomodate almost all levels of play. Still not sure? Call the course. We have found the staff at any of these facilities always willing to help in providing information on any of the courses in the Grand Strand.

Check the local paper daily, as specials and bargains on golf are advertised regularly. Most hotels even have their own golf coordinator to assist you with tee times, course selections, and even transportation.

When you are finished with your golf for the day, you will find the restaraunts and nightly attractions as equally accessible and outstanding as the golf courses.

Lose a few balls? Break a club? Run out of tees? No problem. There is more than an ample supply of quaint little golf shoppes and massive bargain golf stores up and down the Grand Strand.

Three things you need to consider when taking advantage of these great golf bargains this time of year, and we have experienced all of them at one time or another. First, is the heat an humidity. Although it is typically not bad in the morning rounds, we experienced a few afternoon rounds which were quite uncomfortable. Second, it is hurricane season. In the past 10 years we were only pulled off a course once to evacuate. However, most courses were open the next day. Third, the “Dupont Amateur”, one of the largest amateur golf tournaments in the world. There are still more than enough courses, but you may have to avoid a few. The schedule of courses used for this tournament is listed daily in the local paper, (We simply plan our trip one week earlier. Although it really isn’t necessary, we are just anxious to get there and “tee it up”.)

Myrtle Beach in late August is a truly great golf bargain. A large quantity of quality courses to suit every golfers game and budget. We’ll be there!

Benefits Of An Accessible Website: Part 1 – Increase In Reach

The DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) states that service providers must not discriminate against disabled people. A website is regarded as a service and therefore falls under this law, and as such must be made accessible to everyone.

Some organisations are making accessibility improvements to their websites, but many are seemingly not making the accessibility adjustments. Disabled people don’t access their website, they say, so why should they care?

Why you should care about disabled Internet users

The statistics on the number of users who may face difficulties due to your website’s accessibility are quite startling:

* There are 8.6 million registered disabled people in the UK – 14% of the population (source: DRC)

* One in 12 men and one in 200 women have some form of colour blindness – 9% of the UK population (source: Institution of Electrical Engineers)

* Two million UK residents have a sight problem – 4% of the population (source: RNIB)

* There are 12 million people aged 60 or over – 21% of the UK population (source: UK government)

Although there is inevitably some overlap between the aforementioned groups, adding up these numbers provides a total of 48% of the UK population that could potentially face problems with your website’s accessibility. That’s an extraordinarily high number.

It’s not just disabled users who can’t access your website

Non-disabled people may also experience difficulties with your website’s accessibility. Not everyone is viewing your website on the latest version of Internet Explorer, with all the plug-ins and programs that you may require them to have for optimal access.

If your website relies on images, Flash or JavaScript, and fails to provide alternatives, then your website won’t be accessible to a number of web users. The following examples are a common occurrence:

* Users on slow connections regularly turn images off to enable a quicker download time. Some browsers, such as the text-only Lynx browser do not display images at all.

* Not every user has downloaded the latest Flash program that’s needed to access your site. Additionally, the download time on Flash websites often takes so long that users lose patience and don’t even wait to see the content. Just 25% of web users in the UK are connected to the Internet via broadband (source: National Statistics).

* JavaScript is a scripting language that can cause changes to a page, often through mouse functions, buttons, or other actions from the user. For example, pop-ups are opened using JavaScript. JavaScript is unsupported by about 5% of web users, either because they have turned it off to prevent pop-up adverts or because their browser doesn’t support it (source: The Counter). Any JavaScript-driven content provided on your website won’t be accessible to these users.

* PDAs, mobile phones and WebTV have limited support for large images, Flash and JavaScript. You can test your website by downloading the free WebTV viewer. You can also check how your website looks on a mobile phone with the Wapalizer. Don’t underestimate the importance of this: in 2008 alone an estimated 58 million PDAs will be sold (source: eTForecast) and one third of the world’s population will own a wireless device (source: ClickZ)

This article was written by Trenton Moss. He’s crazy about web usability and accessibility – so crazy that he went and started his own web usability and accessibility consultancy (Webcredible – www.webcredible.co.uk) to help make the Internet a better place for everyone.

Learn these feng shui love tips and improve your love life

Whether you wish to achieve feng shui love balance or improve your love life through feng shui, here we will detail some of the most important guidelines for you to succeed at it. These feng shui love guidelines must be applied according to each particular situation and wish.

The first feng shui love guideline you should follow is to clean up your bedroom. Your bedroom shouldn’t be untidy since that would slow down or stuck the energy flow in it. Energy should flow freely and with energy within your bedroom, and for that to happen it must be clean and tidy.

You should also make sure there is a space for that other person to be a part of your life. In order to achieve this, feng shui love tips tell that you should make room for this new person’s clothes and personal things next by yours. Closets and dressers should have some space for that other person to put his or her own stuff.

It is also important that you avoid exercising in your bedroom. Whether if you exercise or keep exercise elements in the bedroom, this wouldn’t allow love energy to fill that space. This feng shui love tip is meant to avoid that your love life feels like taking hard work to be successful.

Another feng shui love guideline talks about old relationships. You should make sure there isn’t energy from an old relationship around. To achieve this, you must remove from your bedroom anything that reminds you of that old relationship, and if possible from your whole house as well.

Feng shui love guidelines also tell that your house main door should be ready to receive love. In order to achieve this, you must check out that this door opens easily and as wide as possible, without any kind of obstacles for it. And ideally, your bedroom door should open the same way as well.

You should make sure that your bed should be placed opposite the door but not directly in front of it. Besides, feng shui love principles tell that your bed shouldn’t have one side against a wall since that would make the person sleeping on that side uncomfortable.

Loss weight Fast and exercise – or face the Consequences!

Start exercising and losing weight now or face the facts later about your health.

If you knew when you were going to die, would you really want to know? If you knew when you were going to lose your life, would you do anything differently? If you had a choice of living longer or living a better quality of life, which would you choose, longer or better?

People say, “if only” they had known they were going to have this happen to me, they would have done things differently. IF ONLY…I had not stressed so much about life. IF ONLY…I had known this was going to happen; maybe I would have stopped smoking, laid off a few hamburgers and fries. Who knows? Maybe I would have taken the stairs more, ridden my bike, and had a medical check up more often.

What if you could actively change the outcome of your life by eating better and getting daily exercise? What if you felt better, had more energy, less pain, and a better attitude toward aging? What if you approached life with more confidence, rather than dreading the day? The fact is you will never know ahead of time when your life will end. Life, love and logic never seem to be on the same page. You can leave this earth anytime and for any reason. How you decide to live those days before you do go is your choice. You can continue down the path you’re going with achy joints, low energy levels, high stress, and poor eating habits or you can choose a different path.

The health of America is going to get worse before it gets better. Diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, heart diseaseare all at epidemic levels. And for the first time in history the kids of today are projected not to live as long as there parents have. The only way for the health of America to get better is for you to be personally responsible, change your attitudes toward exercise, and support one another in the process.

The silent threesome of denial, pride, and lazy has been muted by the fantasy fitness land programs promises immediate results. This silent treatment is killing you from the inside out. Until a few years ago, it was thought that Americans were healthy. Of course, that’s not true. We’ve had a health problem for years.

In the “good years,” more money, more marketing and more-for-me attitudes enabled you to focus on making the big bucks. It allowed you to put off worrying about healthy bodies. The accent was on NOW and not later. But the fiscal wealth we accumulated years ago is NOW being drained by our physical healthcare costs. Eventually, your bad health will consume all the extra dollars you worked so hard to earn. Some of the responsibility falls with the big corporations, insurance companies and hospital groups. But at the end of the day, the buck stops with YOU.

The reality of this situation bites; however, the solution is not to ignore it, but to encourage people to embrace it. Many of you have either given up on yourself or just flat out are living in denial. Either way the choice is still yours. The fact of the matter is there is still hope for America and there is still hope for you, too.

Don’t let the buck stop with you. Take care of your own life before it takes charge of you.

What if you knew that if you didn’t exercise, you would face the CONSEQUENCES soon?

What if you knew that your kids would do exactly as you do? Most people wait until something happens to them or to someone close to them before they change their lifestyle habits. There are no guarantees that healthy living will add one more day to your life, but what if it could? At the very least, what if your day-to-day quality of life could be better?

Or worse yet, what if tomorrow a stroke, heart attack, or cancer struck your life? What then? The first thing to do is for you to face the music or embrace the reality of your health. Accepting your circumstances does not mean you are admitting defeat. It means you are starting to build a foundation in order to move forward.

In a Nut Shell:

Life sometimes has a way of giving us slight hints or sometimes shocking wake-up calls. The question is, “Will you answer the call?” Would your life be any different if you knew what the future held? Most of us would say it would be. The truth is in that old saying, “We really are not promised tomorrow.” You may not be able to change when you will die, but you sure can change how you feel each day through daily exercise and eating the right foods. What would your life be like if you felt better, had more energy and lowered your stress levels? Can you imagine? No one wants bad things to happen to their health. No one wants to pay the price for his or her bad decision, right?

“Are you going to let Denial, Pride, and Laziness keep their grip on you?” There are no guarantees that exercise and eating will prolong death or ward off a disease. However, there is a good chance they can give you a better quality of life? No doubt our health as a whole will get worse before it gets better, but it does not have to be that way for you.

The bottom line is: denying your health is a losing cause; entertaining pride is a waste of energy; and being lazy is no excuse for anything. In the end, only you will be able to decide to accept the truth or deal with the consequences.
